How name numerology works

Name numerology turns the letters of a name into single-digit numbers and reads meaning into them. Here is exactly how it is done — with nothing hidden.

Letters become numbers

Each letter is assigned a number. In the most common system — the Pythagorean one — A=1, B=2 … I=9, then it cycles: J=1, K=2, and so on. You add the letters up and reduce the total to a single digit (with the exception of master numbers).

For example, IVAN → I(9)+V(4)+A(1)+N(5) = 19 → 1+9 = 10 → 1+0 = 1. We show this arithmetic on every name page, so you can always check it yourself.

The core numbers of a name

A name is usually read through three numbers: the Expression (all letters), the Soul Urge (the vowels), and the Personality (the consonants). Add a birth date and you also get the Life Path. See what each one means.
